From the beginning, mental health problems are majorly associated with the female population. Even in mental health magazines, mental health problems are only mentioned for the female population. Why we are neglecting the men’s mental health everywhere? For many psychiatric conditions, men are equally or even more vulnerable than women.

This negligence has just an opposite influence than what we want from the broad discussion and numerous publications related to mental health. By nature, men do not like to share their feelings and try to seek help, even if it’s needed. This unwillingness to share the problems makes a deep impact and the condition worsens. Hence, men with mental illness easily become friends to alcohol and abusive substances to cope with their illness. Not only that, but successful suicide rate is also higher in men. The male population usually selects the harsh methods for suicide, which has a higher success rate.

Some major facts about mental health issues in men.
Major mental health conditions are equally common in men and women. Those are:

a. Bipolar affective disorder (BAD): Even if both genders are equally affected by BAD, the relapse rate is higher in women. However, men are highly vulnerable to alcohol and substance abuse.

b. Schizophrenia: Although the rate is almost similar, the symptoms in men/boys are usually worse than women/girls.

c. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

2. About 3/4th of children with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are boys.

3. About 2/3rd of children with Conduct disorders are boys.

3. Postnatal depression is possible in new Dads. New Dads are usually neglected and not screened, which should be not the case.

4. Gambling, alcohol and substance abuse are more common in men.

5. Men also can be affected by every mental health condition, that is commonly associated with women.

6. In 2017, almost 75% of suicide in the UK committed were males.

7. Excluding children, suicide is the most common cause of death in males in the UK.

8. Over 6 million men suffer from depression every year in US.

That was just a small overview of a hugely neglected topic. This is an appeal to each and every person to continue the discussion about men’s mental health.
