Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases affecting the optic nerve. The optic nerve is the nerve that communicates with the brain about what you see with your eyes. The damage to the optic nerve can result in vision loss and even blindness.

This “sneak thief of sight,” is worldwide second leading cause of blindness, just after cataract. However, unlike cataract, where most of the cases can be surgically corrected, there is no cure for glaucoma and the treatment usually consists of measures to reduce the advancement and complication.

It is estimated to affect about 60 million people worldwide and estimated to affect 80 million people by 2020. About three million are affected only in the US.

As they don’t cause any problems in the early stage, it's difficult to catch them early. There are certain risk factors. Make sure you know your risk and take proper actions. Your primary care provider will help you answer your questions about your risk and the needed eye test.
